Laurel Post 67 to Host Membership Drive
Laurel, MD – Laurel Post 67 of the American Legion will host a membership drive on Saturday, November 11th, from 10 am to 2 pm. The event will feature a car show, raffle, and barbecue competition. All proceeds will go towards boosting membership.
With nearly 2 million members in more than 13,000 posts worldwide, the American Legion family faces challenges when bringing new members. "It's getting harder and harder to find young people interested in joining the American Legion," said Joe Plenzler, director of media relations for the American Legion National Headquarters. "Our average member is now in their mid-60s."
As the number of WWII and Korean War veterans dwindles due to age, finding new members is increasingly essential for the legion. This is especially true in rural areas like Laurel, where the population is aging, and younger people are often unaware of the legion's existence. In addition to honoring and supporting our nation's veterans, membership in the legion also comes with many other benefits, such as discounts on insurance and access to scholarships.
That's why events like Laurel Post 67's membership drive are so important. They help raise awareness about the American Legion's work and encourage people of all ages to get involved.
"We want to show people that the American Legion is still relevant and that we're doing good things in the community," said Laurel Post 67 Commander Bill Burke. "This event is a great way for us to reach out to potential new members.”
